Barcelona-born Xavier Vega’s CV includes 5-star boutique properties – Hotel Banke in Paris, and Madrid’s Hotel Urban – and Costa Rica’s luxurious Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort. Expecting their first child, Xavier and his wife left the rain forest behind, for Mallorca’s sophisticated capital, and his new role as general manager of Purohotel Palma.
In 2004, it was the first boutique hotel in La Lonja. Today, it has 51 guest rooms (11 in the Private Wing), of which 22 were renovated over the winter; the 12 highest-level rooms were upgraded and now have a more Mediterranean feel and look.
Multi-award-winning company OHLAB based the design concept of these gorgeous rooms on the use, and relaxing colours, of organic and natural materials – wood, leather, and hemp rope. The prestigious Palma-based architecture and interior design firm – owned by Jaime Oliver and Paloma Hernaiz – works around the world, with Mallorcan projects including Relojería Alemana’s stores. Each of their new rooms for Puro is “an oasis of happiness,” says Xavier.
They include a maxi bar (mini bar/trolley equipped with full-size bottles of premium spirits and cocktail-making kit, should guests wish to release their inner mixologist), and original wall paintings by Pedro Oliver.
Puro is Mallorca’s first hotel with the cutting-edge Swedish smart and app-based technology system, Invit. This enables guests to stream their personal mobile device contents – music, video, and photos directly to the room TV, and access Puro music, an intuitive hotel guide, interactive local map, and e-concierge.
“Our guests have a cosmopolitan and nomadic spirit, and live a modern lifestyle. They expect to have at least the same style, quality, and technology at our hotel, as they have at home,” says Xavier. “Invit allows us to match our guests’ expectations and provide a better service.”
New spa manager Marisa Juarez, from Barcelona, is a nurturing young woman who has created surprising signature treatments, exclusively for Puro, that have to be experienced to be described. “I have something to communicate,” Marisa says. “People will feel better.” More than a spa, it’s a revolutionary concept … in a hotel that’s known for being in the vanguard of its sector.
For the first time, the rooftop terrace is opening to the public for drinks this year. On the ground floor, DJs still create the perfect night-out ambience on Fridays and Saturdays in Purohotel Palma Bar & Restaurant. A second music CD – Puro Urbano II – has just been released. “People of all nationalities and ages come here for the music,” says Xavier, “It’s an essential part of our personality.”
With its superb new upgraded and refurbished guest rooms, and charming new general manager with international 5-star hotel experience, Purohotel Palma is set for another successful season.
