This restaurant closed in December 2013.
Juan Ginard and his chef wife Berta Gómez opened Restaurante León Alberti in August 2010, serving Mallorcan and signature cuisine based on traditional family recipes passed down through generations, and using fresh produce mainly from Finca Na Set Centes, their agroturismo near Artà.
English and German-speaking Juan welcomed us warmly to the 30-cover restaurant, which has a predominantly white interior, combining contemporary elements, traditional architectural features, and some quirky metal insect sculptures. Lighting is more subtle than in many traditional Mallorcan restaurants.
The three-course evening menu (18,50 €, excluding drinks) offers a choice of three starters, three mains and four desserts. For one or two courses only, average prices are: starters, 9 €; mains, 14,50 €; desserts, 5,50 €. Wines from Mallorca and the Peninsula range from the Ribera del Duero house wine (14 € bottle/3,50 € glass) to local Sió from Ribas (23 € ).
We tried two of the starters, enjoying the flavours and textures of the zingy pistachio vinaigrette-dressed Mallorcan octopus salad with caramelized carrot, rocket and mezclum. Next, home-made gnocchis with creamy parmesan cheese sauce, which had notes of lemon and sage but was a little thin. A garnish would have added colour.
The signature main course dish Aubergines León Alberti is an old recipe from the Artà area, which both Juan’s grandmother and mother used to cook. Berta prepares it with golden medallions of pork fillet. Next, we tried some tasty Mallorcan lamb chops, with rosemary and garlic, good home-made pommes frites, Berta’s own aubergine marmalade, and fried red pepper. We also sampled seasonal Mallorcan squid and prawns, served on a bed of thinly sliced white fennel and carrot with coriander. If prepared incorrectly, squid can be chewy, but this was good. We ended with a smooth classic Crema Catalana, and a moreish silky chocolate mousse.
If you want to experience Mallorcan cuisine, prepared with love and respect for traditional family recipes, you’ll find it here at Restaurante León Alberti – where Juan and Berta will welcome you with enthusiasm and warmth. Our only real gripe was that we had the same cutlery for all the savoury dishes, which meant soiling those pristine white tablecloths . . .
