Numbers don’t lie. Looking at the before-and-after figures written on the chart, it was clear to see I’d lost centimetres from my hips; 5.5cm, to be exact. I’d spent the previous 45 minutes lying on a therapy bed as an advanced radiofrequency device was rolled slowly over my sides and tummy. Pleasantly warming and akin to a massage, I’d found it more relaxing than anything. Could this so-called Slimbeam technology really sculpt the body, as claimed? I’d always imagined that was the domain of more grisly, invasive procedures, like liposuction.
Royal Body Concept

Royal Body Concept arrived in Santa Ponsa in 2014, going on to open a second studio on Palma’s Camino de Genova months later. The idea is based on two methods, both developed by the medical field for physical rehabilitation purposes. Radiofrequency works to drain fat cells and trigger collagen production, while electronic muscle stimulation (EMS) has a powerful toning effect.
As someone who loves the endorphin-raising effects of dance fitness classes, I arrived slightly cynical to try it out at the light, airy Palma centre. However, not having had time to fit in workouts lately and feeling a sense of mild panic about the advancing bikini season, I was interested to see what the effects would be.
My trainer, the inspiringly svelte and fit Antonietta, first had me stand on a special machine designed to analyse various body factors including body fat ratio, metabolic rate, and bone density. It revealed I am a boringly average and a healthy weight for my height, with a resting metabolic age of 31 (I’m 35). Antonietta listened while I told her about my lifestyle and eating habits (including my daily wine drinking habit) suggesting a few gentle, achievable changes that would make a difference to how I feel and look.
After the relaxation of the radiofrequency treatment, the EMS training session came as a bit of a shock. Strapped into a high-tech suit incorporating muscle stimulating pads, intense tingling ran through each part of my body as Antonietta gradually turned up the current for maximum benefit. This, she assured me, produced the effect of exercising 400 muscles at once; the equivalent of a four-hour workout in the gym.
I could believe her. As we ran through a series of standing squats, lunges, and abdominal crunches, the sensation of muscle stimulation was phenomenal. It was great to know I was building calorie-burning muscle and targeting cellulite in just one 20-minute session.
I always thought there was no substitute for healthy eating and exercise, and I still do, but, like adding a shot of spirulina to a glass of organic juice, I now know that adding a little RBC treatment alongside a few positive lifestyle changes supercharges the effects.
