Each year in Colònia de Sant Jordi there is a fair dedicated to salt and spices complete with live cooking demonstrations, food tastings and a salt market feature at this fair which celebrates Ses Salines history in salt extracting.
Pure salt has been harvested from the sea for thousands of years in this area using the same method introduced by the Phoenicians and the tradition still continues to this day.
What to expect
The main events take place in Plaza Europa in Colònia Sant Jordi with the market taking over the square with stalls selling everything related to salt: a myriad of food cured in salt, different salts from around the world and even art and salt lamps. A highlight is the guided tour of the ‘Salinera’, the salt works, where guests can learn about the process of purifying the salt.
Show cooking takes centre stage with local chefs demonstrating how they use the salt in their menus and various restaurants participate and prepare local dishes at reasonable prices.
