About San Juan Gastronomic Market
Opened in June 2015 the independent San Juan Gastronomic Market is located in a building within the S’Escorxador cultural centre in Palma de Mallorca and is designed to seduce visitors and local people with new and various gastronomic experiences. As well as the market’s tempting 17 stalls, you can enjoy eating, drinking, socialising with friends, and a variety of year-round activities in this attractive space.
The formula for this new gourmet market in Palma is similar to that of famous gastronomic markets in other European cities, such as Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon.
San Juan Gastronomic Market has a great gastronomic offer, consisting of high-quality local, national and international products – such as oysters, all kinds of seafood, Mallorcan dishes, cured ham, national cheese, ‘fideuá’, grilled meats, Basque country style ‘pintxos’, spanish omelette, fried or grilled fish, etc.

The history of S’Escorxador
The design of the Modernist building of S’Escorxador, by the famous architect Gaspar Bennazar, won first prize at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1906. It was built as the city’s new slaughterhouse on the old San Juan orchard (hence the market’s name). The building was sensitively refurbished in the ’80s and, in 1990, began a new lease of life as a cultural and commercial centre.
The San Juan Gastronomic Market society was set up by a group of businessmen led by CEO Mr. Fernando Castellanos and general manager Mrs. Mar Rubí. A fully private investment of more than two millions euros was made to refurbish and redecorate the entire building, including terraces.
Apart from this wonderful gastronomic market, you can find Cine Ciutat, an international cinema complex that screens international films in original version, in the cultural centre S’Escorxador.
