While we are enjoying the first signs of spring on the island, a human tragedy is taking place on the outskirts of Palma.
Ex-priest Jaume Santandreu (76 years old) is facing eviction from the finca ‘Casa Llargas’ where he founded a social project in 2009. Sa Casa Llarga is an extension of the shelter Can Gazá and offers a place of refuge for social outcasts. On a daily basis dozens of homeless people show up there and all receive a warm meal and more importantly a warm welcome.
Additionally, the finca is home to approximately 50 people who were carefully chosen as inhabitants. Santandreus concept is not to give them charity but rather an opportunity to earn and work for their food in an honorable way. Every resident has to take on chores in the community like repairs, garden work, taking care of the animals, working in the kitchen, etc.
Six years ago, the decayed house was given to this charismatic man, who basically dedicates his life to helping others. He lives in modest conditions in the finca among those needing shelter. Jaume and his protégés invested a lot of time and money to restore the place and turn it into a livable home again.
Unfortunately, and without warning, the owners have decided to sell the property and Jaume S. is desperately trying to fight this decision. The 76-year old saw himself forced to take drastic measures, chained himself to the gates of the finca and claims that he will stay put until the police intervenes and takes him away by force. The Can Gazá project has been supporting Casa Llargas financially but is not able to raise enough money in order to save the finca or look for a new abode for the community.
Therefore, friends of the project are approaching the public to seek help and abcMallorca would like to support this appeal. We want to encourage everyone to make a donation for this worthy cause.
