I am woman. That’s the name of this new hotel, translated from Mallorcan. This summer, Som Dona Women Only, welcomed its first guests, all of whom are women aged 14 and over. The hotel, which is located in the coastal enclave of Porto Cristo, is a project by the Mallorcan company Som. Its CEO, Joan E. Capellà, tells us the focus has shifted to this particular clientele due to a growing demand for services tailored exclusively to women.
Capellà is clear that the hotel isn’t trying to make a statement. “Som Dona is feminine, not feminist. The project has simply responded to a market trend, which can be seen, for example, in the creation of women-only gyms, taxis and co-working spaces… We did some market research and saw there was also an interest in this kind of product in our own sector.”

The president of Som Hotels’ explains that the initiative not only seeks to innovate, but to contribute to Mallorca’s position as a leading holiday destination. During the project’s development, they encountered very few similar establishments.
“It’s not the first in the world,” says Capellà, “however, it is the first in a European holiday destination.” Will it succeed? “As with all new products, it’ll take work before it comes into its own.” After recalling reactions to the first hotels not to allow children, he adds, “Som Dona presents something different, and as with adult-only hotels, it will have its supporters and critics. In any case, it’s the market which will decide not the model.”
Som Hotels, which currently manages nine properties across Mallorca, hopes to attract groups of friends, mothers and daughters, solo female travellers, and parties heading to the island to celebrate an event. Capellà emphasises that a stay at Som Dona will be a very different experience from hotels offering just women-only rooms or floors. “That hasn’t really worked in Mallorca because away from those spaces, you find the same old thing. That’s why it wasn’t an option for us. Instead, we decided to create an entire concept rooted in the idea of a women-only space.”
With four stars and 39 rooms, Som Dona promises, ‘comfort, relaxation, art, healthy living and Mediterranean flavour.’ The hotel would like to provide a peaceful space for both women wishing to enjoy some alone time, and those eager to meet other women. There are plenty of areas which encourage social interaction. Cultural, sporting, gastronomic and leisure activities can all be organised as well as beauty and wellness treatments too. As Capellà says, “all these features will increase the hotel’s appeal, but the simple fact that our clients will be surrounded solely by women will be, in itself, a whole other experience.”
