The Swiss-owned Finca Son Mayol in the rural area of Establiments has been producing high-quality organic Angus beef since 2008 and inaugurated its Bodega Son Mayol in October 2016.
The first vineyard was planted here eight years ago and, by 2018, they plan to have 20 hectares planted with vines. The spectacular contemporary waveform bodega was designed by the Spanish architect Javier Campos, with respect for the environment an important consideration.
The spacious winery incorporates the latest winemaking technology on its three floors – two of which are underground. Architectural features include the 300m² reception area’s glass floor – affording views of the wine tanks below – and what is thought to be Mallorca’s largest expanse of stone-built wall (more than 15 metres high), best seen from the lowest floor.
French-born Marie Barbé is the bodega’s technical director and has brought international winemaking experience to her role, having worked in wineries in France, Chile, Russia, and India. She works alongside the internationally renowned oenologist and assessor Patrick Léon – former winemaker of Mouton Rothschild – who comes to the Bodega Son Mayol every month. Marie and Patrick have previously worked together and this is the only winery on Mallorca that benefits from his expertise and huge winemaking knowledge. His vision is to produce Mallorca’s best wines.
Bodega Son Mayol produced 7,000 bottles of its first two wines (from 2014). Maximum production could eventually be 250k-300k bottles. The first wines were aged in French oak to give them more structure, rather than aroma. Their wines are distributed exclusively on Mallorca by La Vinoteca.
Bodega Son Mayol ‘Le Premier Vin’ 2014
50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot. Fruity, light, and agreeable, to drink with friends as an aperitif, or with fish. Aged in new and used barrels for 12 months and sold in normal bottles and magnums.
Bodega Son Mayol ‘Le Grand Vin’ 2014
60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot (and including a very small amount of Petit Verdot). Living up to its name, this luscious wine has more complexity, with more structure and aroma of oak. Aged 14 months in new and used barrels. Also available in magnums and double magnums. The labels for this wine will feature the work of a Mallorcan artist. For their first ‘Le Grand Vin’, they chose Francesca Martí, whose creation reflects the theme of her series ‘Senses and Movements.’ (‘Sentidos y Movimientos’). The artist’s work is also displayed in the bodega.
