About Son Moragues
On the outskirts of the Mallorcan village of Valldemossa, there is a special agricultural estate. Home to more than 10,000 olive trees spread over 100 hectares of land, it produces some of the most exquisite olive oil available on the island.
Exclusive tours of the finca can be arranged prior appointment, where one can purchase beautifully-packaged Son Moragues products – which include heavenly homemade preserves – and to gain an insight into the remarkable activities and attempts at conservation made by this small but dynamic company.
A multi-national team of individuals, each with strong links to Mallorca, has over the space of a decade worked hard to restore Son Moragues to its former glory.
The 700 year-old estate of Son Moragues has a rich history. Established by the Moragues family in the fourteenth century, the noble finca and olive groves became one of the most important centres of agriculture in the Serra de Tramuntana, its name synonymous with traditional Valldemossa farming.
In the late nineteenth century a member of Austrian nobility, Archduke Luis Salvador, fell in love with Son Moragues and established there a museum of the island’s traditional trades and agriculture. In the past century, the estate was used as a private residence but has now, thanks to the efforts of the current guardians, rediscovered its agricultural heritage.
Olives & olive oil
In 1888 Son Moragues won its first medal, awarded by the Barcelona World Fair for the superior flavour of its olive oil. As smooth and sweet as it ever was, this gourmet treat is the result of taking the earliest crop of fruit from the oldest trees of the estate. Presented in a hand-blown glass bottle and packaged in a wooden box, it makes a perfect gift.
Classic Mallorcan olive oil Es Roquissar is priced lower, and is a quality staple to have in your kitchen.
You can also buy jars of superb whole green olives, broken green olives, and black olives.
Orange Marmalade; Tomato and Basil Jam; Purple Onion Jam and Lemon Jam. All of the preserves at Son Moragues are made using exciting recipes, free of artificial additives, colourings, flavourings and preservatives – and they taste divine.
In 2016, Son Moragues won the prestigious Laus award for the stunning design of its line of products.
Conserving the Tramuntana
Dedicated to EU-regulated, organic production methods, Son Moragues rejects any use of chemical pesticides and fertilisers, and remains fully committed to working the land in a sustainable way.
The Son Moragues estate in Valldemossa has been in existence since the 14th century. Awoken from slumber, the olive groves are now being cultivated again.
