Even though the winter here was unusually mild and sunny, we have still been looking forward to spring – one of my favourite times on Mallorca. It’s always good to see businesses reopening after a winter break, with facilities and staff rejuvenated and full of enthusiasm for the start of what looks set to be a promising season.
2016 is destined to be another exciting year for new ventures on the island and, on page 90, you’ll read about the German business Villa Wesco. This centre is a must-visit for those who love cooking and kitchen accessories.
Two British people with a strong connection to the sea feature in this edition: Shaun Carkeek designs and develops some of the world’s fastest yachts for international regatta teams, right here in Palma (see page 108). Endurance swimmer Anna Wardley, who has a home in Colonia de Sant Jordi, will be aiming for a place in the record books when she starts her 215-km Balearic Swim Challenge in May; read about this remarkable woman.
Five years ago this June, UNESCO awarded World Heritage Site status to the Serra de Tramuntana – the jewel in the island’s crown, and the subject of this edition’s guide. We headed for the mountains to visit Port de Sóller for lunch, enjoying the seafront location of the German-owned restaurant Sa Barca – which has already begun its third season in the port.
