As I sit to write this editorial, the world seems to be collapsing around me. Many believe, as I do, that the current challenges we face globally are a wake-up call; we need to change how we live. So our theme of sustainability has become much more important to us all in the past few months.
Those of you who follow me on social media and receive my newsletter from helencummins.com will know that my mantra is Life is better Slow. Slow for me stands for:
S – sustainable
L – local
O – organic
W – made With love
These are the values that underpin all that we do, but we have a long way to go and we know it. The process of change begins with awareness, and that is perhaps the stage we are at in the evolution of finding a new way to live our lives that causes less damage to the planet.
Indeed, this is not a new topic for us; the spring edition in 2010 was dedicated to all things Eco on the island, and in 2012 we published the Green issue. The difference now is the level of interest in this topic, and indeed what is available on the island in comparison to ten years ago.
Small businesses and multinationals are changing. For this issue we met the innovative couple behind NU (page 94), the first zero-waste food market in Palma; the owners of The Pink Pepper Tree (page 76), a great example of the new wave of eco-friendly finca hotels on Mallorca; and Sabrina Fluxá (page 70), the CEO of Iberostar, who discussed Wave of Change, their project to create a more sustainable hospitability business worldwide.
Many visit Mallorca to reconnect with themselves and nature. The Sadhana Works Healthy Hub (page 52) is a new initiative that brings together some of the best wellness practitioners in one incredible space: a must-visit for those who prioritise their wellbeing.
I hope these inspiring stories will be a catalyst for you to consider more sustainable ways to live your life. We plan to continue this narrative, so stay tuned to our various platforms to hear more about sustainable initiatives on Mallorca.
