La Ruta Martiana is Palma’s weekly Tuesday tapas route. The word ‘Martiana’ is a play on words referring to the Spanish word for Tuesday, ‘martes’, and also meaning Martian. You can even buy a t-shirt with an alien emblazoned on it from one of the bars en route if you want a souvenir of the night.

The trail takes place in the Sa Gerreria neighbourhood, a stone’s throw away from Plaça Major. The main centres are Plaça d’en Coll, Plaça de la Quartera and Plaça del Mercadal, and the streets between, including Pes de la Farina, Cordería, Galera and Espartería.
Participating bars offer a tapa and a drink for €2-3. The most common form of tapa is actually the basque ‘pintxo’. A pintxo is a tasty morsel of meat, fish, seafood, sausage or cheese skewered to a piece of bread with a toothpick. The drink is usually a small measure of wine, beer or Menorcan gin with lemon. The atmospheric Molta Barra and nearly 500 year old Cala Seu are two long-running and recommended stops.
