Vall d’Or is an 18-hole golf course just a short distance inland, with elevated views over the southeast coastline, including the attractive fishing village Portocolom and resort of Cala d’Or, and located some 59 km from Palma. Vall d’Or was inaugurated in 1986 as a 9-hole course and enlarged in 1993.
The front nine holes are on smooth rolling fairways bordered by almond and olive trees, where strong winds can sometimes present a challenge. In summer, the breezes make play more comfortable. The back nine holes are on more rugged fairways, closer to the sea, and resemble some of the links courses found in Britain. This is not a difficult course but those who haven’t played here before are sure to encounter a few surprises.
Vall d’Or Golf now has a full network of buggy paths (those on the second half of the course were recently completed and 44 new trees have also been planted on this half). The course is a popular one and can be very busy at peak times.
The clubhouse is home to Máxime restaurant (named after its excellent chef), which has an extensive terrace with panoramic views over the course and coastline. It’s open all day, 365 days a year, to non-golfers as well as players. They offer a varied menu of snacks and dishes, as well as a daily lunchtime menu for €19,50 from 12:00-17:00 hrs. In summer, they hold Friday night BBQs on the terrace, with live music. Máxime is an excellent venue for events such as weddings and other celebrations.
Other sporting facilities include a swimming pool and two glass-walled and illuminated paddle tennis courts.
In 2011, a European golfing website included Vall d’Or Golf in its top 50 most popular golf courses in Europe.
