Everything started with a rubbish bin. Not just a normal one, obviously, but a brightly coloured one with a chromed swing-flap. Egbert Neuhaus discovered it during a study stay in the States in the 1970s. Neuhaus was so taken with the metal bucket that he redesigned it years later and introduced it to the German market as ‘Pushboy’. That was the beginning of the company brand Wesco, which nowadays is one of Europe’s most popular manufacturers of kitchen accessories.
From March 14th, Wesco is also set to conquer the “household- and deco-hearts” on Mallorca. The enterprise has opened a so-called experience centre for brands, on the main road in Santa Maria, housed in two merged townhouses that underwent a costly renovation. In the main building, different floors display the company’s products such as, for example, the tubby retro-style bread bin or the already-mentioned ‘Pushboy’ trash cans, in a total of 16 different colours. Furthermore, you can find kettles, spice grinders, eggcups, retro trolleys, biscuit tins, carafes, ashtrays, cosmetic bins, and an array of different bathroom accessories with the typical Wesco designer-look.
The house also accommodates a fully equipped cooking school with a total of 20 seats. As head of school, the German star chef Marcel Reß was commissioned; he lives on the island and won the Spanish television show ‘Top Chef’ a few months ago – which made him known to the locals as well. “The school offers various workshops with different topics every week,” says Ana Lado, who will be responsible as the general manager in Villa Wesco.

The Spaniard – who is originally from Santiago de Compostela – moved to Germany when she was a small child and has been working for the company Wesco for many years. “Our experience-cooking classes can be booked by individuals or in groups. After several hours of very practically oriented lessons all participants eat their dishes together with the head chef in the adjoining dining room. Those who do not wish to cook but rather just observe, can also join in for the meal later on,” Lado tells us. Additionally, a huge sun deck with a fabulous view over Santa Maria can also be used for cooking events, barbecues, or sundowners.
In the neighbouring building more showrooms can be found. You can reach the house via a pretty renovated patio, alongside a large garden and an infinity pool. This space is planned to be used for any kind of family or company event. In the above-mentioned showrooms the designer furniture, produced by Wesco, as well as more decorative material for your own four walls, is on display and for sale.
The fact that the choice of location for Villa Wesco was Santa Maria, is no coincidence. “Santa Maria has preserved its typical Mallorcan character. That was important to us,” says Hendrik Neuhaus, the son of the company founder Egbert Neuhaus and authorized representative for the opening of the subsidiary on Mallorca. “Moreover, the village is situated in a strategic spot; it’s relatively easy to reach from anywhere on the island.”
The target group for the experience centre for brands is mainly the numerous foreign residents on Mallorca, who already know the Wesco brand. However, in cooperation with distinguished travel agencies, they also want to bring hotel and cruise ship holidaymakers to Santa Maria in the future. Afterwards they can visit the Macia Batle winery, which is just around the corner and has also become a cooperation partner of Wesco on Mallorca.
Both Ana Lado and Hendrik Neuhaus hope that their potpourri-coloured experience-shopping-world will also attract the locals at some stage. It wouldn´t be surprising. In the production location Arnsberg, in Germany, the concept of looking, cooking, eating, and buying has been successfully running for many years. There, Villa Wesco attracts around 100,000 visitors a year.
