Does Miquel Gelabert feel offended by his nickname ‘El Loco de Manacor’? Local people call him ‘the madman of Manacor’, but he simply smiles: “That’s nice. It honours me.” Maybe you must be a little bit crazy to plant and connect 19 different vineyards, 34,000 vines and over 50 different grape varieties, like a patchwork, in order to produce 16 different wines. This is worth respect and appreciation. Miquel´s advice in terms of winemaking is highly sought-after in the wine business. He tells us an amusing story: he had been asked for help last year by a foreign winemaker. The young vines were constantly being eaten by animals. Miquel immediately recognized the problem during a site visit.

The fences (against animals) of the property were the problem. For the rabbit, who lived on the land before the vines were planted, could not escape and thus there was a growing family of rabbits. Solving the problem was obviously easy: a hunter had to be hired. But the animal-loving winemaker lady refused it – inconceivable for Miquel: either fence, hunter, or no winemaking. These simple conclusions make Miquel Gelabert such a successful winemaker. Suitable vines are chosen for his estates and soils. Every year he makes new growing experiments. If an attempt fails, then there is another use. After all of these tests 16 different wine brands have emerged. Miquel and his customers do not want to miss even one.
