On a recent visit to a large supermarket chain, I wandered through the various departments looking for locally produced products – things that I could buy to support the local economy. I was surprised to find very little on offer – particularly in the wine section. With so many great Mallorcan bodegas, it’s difficult to understand why this supermarket chain seems to ignore the importance of supporting not only local wine producers and vine growers, but also farmers, salt harvesters, olive oil producers etc., to ensure that their products reach the local consumer. But it is, after all, the consumer who decides where to shop and what to buy, so maybe next time you’re choosing a product with a local option available – even if the price is a little higher – think about the local economy and do your bit (if you can) to ensure the sustainability of local jobs and the creation and development of Mallorcan products.
Viva Mallorca is your guide to getting the most from your time on the island, whether it is just a short visit or you’re lucky enough to live here year round. The Last Word is a reminder to us all to discover (or rediscover) the beauty of Mallorca. And if you are a bit of a gourmet, we uncover three hidden gems in our restaurant review of quality finca restaurants which are not to be missed.
We have the pleasure of interviewing Pedro Iriondo and his friendly staff at Fomento del Turismo – the tourism organisation which has worked hard for 106 years to promote Mallorca globally. We meet the very handsome Mr Hugo Boss for Spain, in an interesting interview about the idiosyncrasies of satisfying customer’s needs locally while managing a global organisation. A company which has reached the heights of Hollywood is actually a talented duo named ‘a-divina’; find out how they communicate with their international clients from the comfort of their living room sofa in Palma.
We visit the beautiful town of Sóller to meet local Chinese resident Mei Hong, who has built quite a reputation for herself as one of the best massage therapists around – and I agree! ‘All about Me’ will give you lots of great gift ideas for (dare I mention the word in October?) Christmas for you or your loved one… well there are not that many shopping days left! And finally, enjoy our Viva Mallorca guide which is packed with great ideas for fun things to do with friends and family.
