In mid-June Andrea Fórizs of “Breathspiration” agency organises a yoga and art therapy workshop in Randa. Participants are housed in a mansion from the 13th century; there are seven double rooms with bathroom, an old kitchen from the Middle Ages, garden with swimming pool and terrace, and a lovely yoga room.
Their Kundalini yoga classes are held in the morning – with exercises to help increase energy levels, to expand awareness through deep relaxation. After a vegetarian breakfast and lunch, various group activities such as meditation and body-painting experiments are on the programme. Lecturer and psychologist Lua Marta del Castillo Sáenz understands art therapy as a “process and a nonverbal way to live through conflicts and resolve them”.
Weight loss and nutrition
It’s hard to lose – or even gain – weight sensibly and permanently without a good knowledge of nutrition. Whether it’s to lose or gain kilos, or to achieve optimum nutrition for health reasons, a qualified nutritionist or diet specialist can help you reach your goal. Suzanne Garaty of Vital Nutrition is a qualified clinical nutritionist based on Mallorca, who founded her business in 2008. She studied nutritional cookery in the USA, has also graduated as a British Registered Nutritional Therapist (College of Naturopathic Medicine), and is a member of the British Association of Applied Nutrition & Nutritional Therapists.
Nutripure, founded by Sonja Rohrbacher (a nutrition and metabolism specialist, qualified in ecotrophology), offers a number of programmes designed to help clients achieve a healthier, stronger, and slimmer body, using the science of nutrition and metabolism. Each programme begins with a detailed analysis of the individual client’s metabolic functions. Several private clinics – including Marigan Clinic in Palma, and Medisan in Inca – also offer the services of a nutritionist, nutrition counselling, or weight management specialist.

Mallorca doesn’t have its own Dead Sea, where you can relax by floating effortlessly on the water, but the island does offer the possibility to enjoy a similar sensation. Floatation therapy uses sensory deprivation to create the feeling that you are floating in mid-air. Muscles relax and a sensation of total weightlessness is experienced. During this time, the brain is relaxed – creating a dream-like state – and releases endorphins, which are beneficial to our well-being. Floatation therapy can reduce stress, energize the body, reduce blood pressure and improve circulation. It’s also a very pleasurable experience.
Onda Vital Holistic in Palma offers floatation therapy. It takes place in a special bath-like tank, housed in a small private cabin within this health and wellness centre. The tank contains water that’s super-saturated with salt, and kept at skin temperature, for an environment where you can float effortlessly. Floatation therapy is available here by prior appointment. Onda Vital Holistic is located within a residential area of the city, close to the Via Cintura, but there is a large public car park opposite the centre.

This Japanese form of alternative medicine is based on traditional Chinese medicine. Shiatsu is the Japanese word for finger pressure, and techniques involve massages with fingers, thumbs, and the palms of the hands, stretching, and joint manipulation. Practitioners believe that an energy called ‘qi’ flows in a network through the body, and their treatment aims to optimise that flow. Shiatsu is available in a number of centres, clinics, and spas on Mallorca. In Palma, Agnes Eisenkorb has been treating clients for more than 18 years at her Centro de Shiatsu.
A member of the Sanjo Federation and shiatsu practitioner recognised by the German Shiatsu Federation, she also offers seminars and workshops. Clínica Doctor Morano in Palma also offers shiatsu as part of its wide choice of treatments. In Puerto Portals, shiatsu is just one of the many beneficial treatments offered by the Bodhana Wellness Centre. Anna Mazzella at the Beauty Lounge by Ametjs (Gran Hotel Son Net) lists shiatsu on her list of beauty and wellbeing treatments.
Experts recommend regular massage for improved health and wellbeing. For busy people, a massage not only relaxes tense muscles and stimulates the body’s healing system, but also provides precious relaxation time. The best-known types are: Sports – Shine Spa at Sheraton Mallorca Arabella Golf Hotel offers some specifically for golfers. Aform of alternative medicine, reflexology is a manual therapy in which the trained reflexologist uses special hand techniques to apply pressure to the certain points on the feet and hands that have a direct relationship with the body’s organs, stimulating the whole body’s energy lines and systems.
The technique is very relaxing, can act on specific symptoms, and may help identify the existence of a disorder that requires further investigation. Reflexology is offered at specialist wellbeing centres (such as Bodhana Wellness Centre in Puerto Portals, and GAIA Therapies in Palma) and in several hotels, including Belmond La Residencia Spa, Hotel Reads’ Vespasian Spa, and Son Caliu Hotel Spa-Oasis.
An increasing number of boutique hotels on Mallorca offer some wellness treatments or can arrange for a therapist’s visit, by appointment. Guests staying at L’Avenida Hotel in Sóller can enjoy a foot reflexology massage – and other treatments – in the comfort of their hotel room. For those who prefer treatments at home, in their hotel, or on their boat, reflexology is one of the many treatments offered by Spa@home Mallorca.

Aperiodic detox programme is the ideal way to kick-start a healthier new lifestyle and, although over-the-counter detox kits are avilable, working with an expert in this area is more likely to lead to the desired results. “Detox your lifestyle” by Susanne Hougaard Nielsen can devise a complete detox regime for you, to adapt your lifestyle and needs for a healthier way of life. Susanne’s programme is designed to make clients more aware of what they eat, which she calls ‘mindful eating’. Clients can expect to feel lighter and more energetic. A number of detox retreats are available for those who prefer the discipline of being away from the temptations of daily life, or sharing the experience with others. Detox Mallorca offers week-long retreats (including yoga) throughout the year, based at fincas on Mallorca, and by Sa Vida’s Ursula Peer, an Austrian specialist in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Detox Mallorca can also tailor a luxury detox day for one or more people at your home – including yoga, various treatments, and an organic Mediterranean lunch, prepared for you.
Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson, Sting, and Cher are among the celebrities associated with the raw food diet. Raw foodism is generally defined as a vegan eating regime in which at least 75 per cent of food intake has not been cooked or processed at a temperature greater than 47 degrees Celsius. Even if it doesn’t appeal as a full-time diet, there’s plenty of evidence that making even just some raw food choices is good for health.
Unlike California, the widespread availability of raw food dishes in restaurants hasn’t yet reached Mallorca, but this way of eating is becoming more popular here. Among a few others, Ziva to Go vegan café in Santa Catalina offers raw food dishes on its eat-in or take-out menu; Bon Lloc – Mallorca’s first vegetarian restaurant when it opened in 1978 – today also offers vegan and raw food dishes.
Mallorca-based Beverley Pugh studied at the Hippocrates Health Institute in the USA and is a qualified Health Educator and Coach, Raw Food Chef and Instructor. The author of the book ‘La comida con vida’, Beverley offers a raw food consultancy service and has an online shop.

Vegan & vegetarian restaurants
According to Mallorca Vegan (an information service for vegans and vegetarians living or visiting here) Spain has seen a 94 per cent increase since 2011 in new restaurants focused on plant-based gastronomy – the fastest growth of any European country. A decade ago, vegetarians would have found eating out on Mallorca quite a challenge; vegans probably didn’t even consider it! Whatever your reasons for one of these lifestyle choices – ethical, environmental, or the proven health benefits – today you can find a growing number of restaurants and cafés all around Mallorca, either dedicated to vegetarian or vegan cuisine, or including suitable dishes on their menu.
With three days’ notice, the Michelin-starred Marc Fosh in Palma will create a gastronomic vegan menu, and you may find other good restaurants that will prepare something suitable, given advance notice. There are also hotels catering for veggie and vegan guests. Joining the social group Veg*n Meetup Mallorca, run by British vegan Nicole Eden, is an opportunity to meet up with other like-minded people. See the appropriate section in the directory (at the back of this guide) for some suggested vegetarian/vegan eateries.
Across the Balearic Islands more than 800 organic farms and producers have been certified by the CBPAE (‘Consell Balear de la Producció Agraria Ecológica’), so you don’t have to go far to find ecological fresh produce and foodstuffs on Mallorca. Organic farms offering produce directly include Son Barrina, near Llubí (organic produce and other ecological foodstuffs, household and personal products). Near Manacor, Sa Teulera farm shop is open three days a week to the public. Binifela, near Capdepera, opens their finca to shoppers two mornings a week. Closer to Palma are Amadip-Esment, and Biogranja La Real – which also offers allotment-style plots to grow your own produce.
Organic markets are held in Santa Maria on Sunday mornings and in Palma’s Pl. Bisbe Berenguer de Palou (Pl. dels Patins) on Saturday mornings. In Portals Nous, Peras & Pears offers fresh organic produce and delicious take-away soups, salads, and fresh juices. Love Eat! has an excellent online organic shop: order online, collect your order from them or have it delivered by courier to your door. The Week of Wellness retreat combines Tai Chi and reflexology to balance body, mind, and spirit, with walks in Mallorca’s beautiful countryside – designed to release stress and help recharge our batteries. There’s also time simply to relax, have a dip in the pool, and enjoy the comfort, good food, wine, and company at the rural retreat location, the 18th-century Hotel Son Ametler near Pollença. The hotel has its own organic farm – providing produce for the kitchen (and guests’ meals) – and a swimming pool and terrace.
Son Ametler’s guest room toiletries are organic, and the hotel uses solar power to generate some of its electricity. This retreat – taking place next in October 2015 – is organised by British specialist business The Retreat Company. Sometimes it’s good to take some time out from your day-to-day life, to focus on your own wellbeing and personal development; what lovelier island than Mallorca on which to do this? The very special energy of this island intensifies the positive effects of ‘time out’, spent in the company of like-minded people. Bodhana Wellness Centre in Puerto Portals organises open retreats of two to five days’ duration, which involve meditation, awareness, therapy, and personal growth. Guests stay in a beautiful and relaxing environment and enjoy healthy food.
Each retreat is dedicated to a particular topic or theme, for example, tantra, bodywork, wellness, detoxing, or yoga. At the heart of these retreats though is meditation: the various active, passive, guided, and silent techniques allow easier processing of everything else that is experienced during your ‘time out’.
Bodhana also organises the annual Mallorca Meditation Festival – this year June 4th-7th – which takes place at the Finca Ca’n Corem near Campos. In English and Spanish, it’s an opportunity to connect with self and with others who want to learn, share or deepen their knowledge of meditation and other consciousness-expanding techniques.

Pilates is the perfect exercise system for improving balance and flexibility, and can help sculpt your body for a taller, longer, and leaner profile. Low-impact, it benefits both mind and body, focusing on breathing, stretching, and strengthening the entire body. Whether or not you have any experience of Pilates, this retreat in Selva should be beneficial. It’s organized and led by British wellness and Pilates specialist Susie Mermaid of ‘Mermaid Wellbeing’ and based at the tranquil rural setting of Petit Hotel Son Arnau, on the outskirts of the village.
The retreat includes: six nights’ accommodation in one of the hotel’s six individually decorated and well-equipped guest rooms; 60-minute Pilates sessions (equipment provided) each morning by the infinity pool (weather permitting), breakfast, and healthy dinners – four of which are taken at the hotel, the other two in local restaurants. Also included is a cycling day in the Tramuntana mountains (with lunch provided).
There’s plenty of time for participants to relax and spend time as they wish, or treat themselves to a massage or reflexology session with Susie. Two of these retreats have so far been planned for this year: May 7th-13th and October 2nd-8th.

Lynne Franks Retreat
Lynne Franks, author of ‘Grow – The Modern Women’s Handbook’, runs these retreats three times a year for small groups of women, at her mountainside home in Deià. She describes the retreats as ‘a journey of transformation and empowerment’. Along with Lynne, participants explore the many feminine qualities needed for personal and professional fulfilment, through a programme of meditation, visioning, poetry, creative expression, and deep, personal journeying.
The six-day retreat includes healthy and delicious local cuisine, and additional activities, such as mountain walks, dancing, creative writing, and classes on the inner artist. Some one-to-one time with Lynne is included, during which she coaches participants personally and professionally, and equips them with an action plan for the future to help them achieve their dreams and reach their potential. Participants stay in Lynne’s peacefully located house, which has stunning sea views, two swimming pools, a hot tub, and several spacious shaded terraces, within a walled garden of olive and citrus trees. Women from around the world attend these retreats, and many forge lasting personal and business relationships during their time together here.
Dana Holidays is a specialist in the topic of mindfulness and organized one-week workshops in Mallorca. The six-day “Mindfulness” intensive course is scheduled end of September at Son Salas in Sóller. The house from the 17th century, and surrounded by olive, orange and lemon trees, has a large pool overlooking the Tramuntana mountains – and provides the perfect environment for a conscious existence.
Each seminar starts with the sun salutation (yoga). After breakfast, participants learn mindfulness meditation by Jon Kabat-Zinn, who founded the Center for Mindfulness in Massachusetts. His programme promises less stress through mindfulness, meditation include light yoga exercises, and the body scan, a kind of inner scanning of the body. The core of all exercises is the breathing technique with which one anchors one’s attention more in the present. A Mindfulness and a yoga teacher accompany the retreat.
Detox & Massage Retreat Week
Five people had the same idea, when they founded “Om Ashram” in Estellencs. The international team of yoga teachers, massage therapists, and experts in meditation, Ayurveda and other alternative therapies, created a retreat for stressed souls on a farm from the 13th century. Surrounded by the mountains of the Tramuntana and overlooking the sea, you can relax, enjoy new body experiences, lose weight, and meditate.
The Detox Massage Week is a blend of yoga with breathing exercises and relaxation techniques, ayurvedic massage, and nutrition. Facial yoga, stand up paddle and hiking tours are also on offer. Participants learn about organic farming; many ingredients for their vegetarian dishes come from their own cottage garden.
Byron Katie Retreat
Ralf Giesen and his four-member team are specialised in “The Work of Byron Katie” at Mallorca in Ariany and Bendinat. The mental technique to challenge thoughts was invented by the American Byron Katie. It consists of two steps, offers self-knowledge, and helps to deal with problems. Firstly, stressful thoughts are identified, then investigated with the help of four recurring questions and reversals. So you can learn to be internally clearer to live without fear, to communicate sincerely, and be more present in the here and now.
In one-week courses, the participants will be working with The Work issues such as relationship problems, self-love, work, and family. The locations in Ariany and Bendinat offer a Mediterranean garden, pool, seminar and several guest rooms – a relaxed, calm seminar environment. Languages: English, German.
When you think of Yoga you might think of people in weirdly twisted poses…but yoga is much more than poses! Derived from the Sankrit word “yuj” which means “to unite or to integrate” yoga is a 5000 year old Indian boday of knowledge. Give yourself a yoga boost and have time to experience all what Palma has to offer. This will be a real treat for your body, heart & soul! Amazing opportunity to meet, practice and play.
