The challenge of obtaining a reliable broadband Internet service in certain areas of Mallorca has been solved by local telecommunications company WiFi Baleares. The three-year-old company has more than 80 relay stations and claims it can now deliver its wireless broadband service to 98 per cent of the island – and provide a solution for the other two per cent, using alternative technologies.
WiFi Baleares’ monthly charge for ADSL (up to 6M) is 38 euros plus IVA. The cost of installation and set-up is from 258 euros plus IVA, depending on the type of receiver necessary to obtain a good signal; the router costs 41 euros plus IVA. WiFi Baleares also offers a fixed telephone line service.
abcMallorca freelance writer Jan Edwards has been using the company’s system for a month now and is delighted with the service: “I live in a remote valley 10km north of Manacor and several Internet providers had told me over the past few years that it was impossible to have broadband in our location. WiFi Baleares installed their system quickly and efficiently, on a Saturday morning, using their basic receiver – not much larger than a side plate. They followed up the installation with a phone call and a visit to check that I was happy. And I am!”
WiFi Baleares is the official Internet provider for Real Mallorca football club, and is also starting to provide fibre optic connections to companies with high service requirements. They are also now able to offer their service on Menorca and Ibiza. Their staff speak very good English.
