Preparations for the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Mallorca Open began in Santa Ponsa, when those involved in 2016’s event gathered in high anticipation of this landmark Balearic sporting date.
Mallorca’s debut on the WTA calendar was announced back in 2015, when the expansion of the grass court season from two to three weeks allowed for new locations to be added to the prestigious international competition.
The south-west headquarters of real estate partner Engel & Völkers hosted many prominent faces from sport and business circles including WTA tennis ambassador Toni Nadal; Richard Stoakes, board member of Wimbledon; Marc Fosh, Michelin Star chef; Hans Lenz, managing director of Engel & Völkers Mallorca South West; Edwin Weindorfer, Emotion CEO and Peer Zebergs, tournament director of WTA Mallorca.
A global leader for women’s professional sport, the Women’s Tennis Association stages an average 57 events and four Grand Slams in 33 countries annually. The addition of Mallorca will not only raise the island’s sports portfolio, but bring considerable tourism benefits throughout the coming years.
WTA Mallorca Open will take place from 13 to 19 June 2016. More information can be obtained from www.wtamallorca.com.
